Lake George Political Action Committee |
|||||
| With the application of the American Freightways Corporation's request for a zoning variance for a freight truck distribution center (later to become the FED EX Terminal) and subsequent granting in spite of serious objections from local land and cottage owners, several lake residents felt it necessary to establish a presence to interface with Branch and Steuben County elected officials. Better to know the officials and be in a situation to have the capability of addressing concerns than to be unknowns in the community. A political action committee was formed and has taken the responsibility for keeping local officials aware of our concerns. Gary Zandstra has taken the charge and helped with our needs and goals in several areas. A recent request to the Steuben County Planning Board for a variance in zoning to build Garage Condos east of Hwy 27 just south of the "Tool Shed" was denied. Local residents objected to this project because it would adversely affect the surrounding property values, increase traffic and generally open the possibility of having additional transient traffic too near the east shore of the lake. Lake patrols have been trained and augment Sheriff and DNR patrols in keeping Lake George safe and observe the curfews giving fishermen and water sport activists their own times on the lake. Our PAC has been instrumental in working with local law enforcement to maintain the lake character and understand the needs of cottage owners to maintain order on the lake.
