At the Sept 9, 06 meeting of the Lake George Cottage Owners Association Board of Directors, speaker Jim Donahoe from Aquatic Weed Control gave a very interesting presentation on the exploding Eurasian Milfoil problem.   One noteworthy point was that PHOSPHATES, derived from fertilizers, grass clippings, decaying leaves and animal excrement, contribute to proliferation of these weeds. Phosphates are like "junk food" to certain water fauna - such as Eurasian Milfoil. If you must fertilize, chose a "Lake Friendly Fertilizer" - one that does not contain phosphates.  It was also mentioned that PHOSPHATES do not degrade but accumulate in the lake. Check the section under AQUATIC CONCERNS for more info.
